Atomic Explorers is a self-led visit to the museum that can be supplemented with educational materials focused on STEM and history designed by the Atomic Museum. Atomic Explorers is open to all ages and can be requested Monday through Thursday. Start time is at 9:30am and educators should plan to spend at least 90 minutes in the museum. A maximum of 60 students may participate per day.

Clark County Desert Conservation Program: Mojave Max

Assembly Presentations
The Mojave Max Education Program provides educational assemblies in the fall and winter months each year. The assemblies include appearances by a ‘Ranger’ who discusses desert tortoise biology and conservation, an educator who discusses Mojave Desert weather which plays an important part in Mojave Max’s emergence, and the costumed Mojave Max mascot. The assemblies are interactive and students are given an opportunity to answer ‘quiz’ questions to earn prizes!
Tortoise Talks
Clark County School District teachers and youth and civic organizations may request “Tortoise Talk” presentations. Unlike the Mojave Max assemblies, individual Tortoise Talks are conducted year-round, and do not include an appearance by the costumed Mojave Max mascot. We will visit schools, clubs or civic organizations and give an approximately 45-minute lesson about the desert tortoise and its habitat, the Mojave Desert. The lesson also includes information about Mojave Desert weather, desert tortoise biology, and the importance of desert conservation. Tortoise Talks are best-suited for individual classes with a maximum audience of 40 students. The presentation is fun, interactive, curriculum-based, and appropriate for kids in grades K-5.
Field Trips
The Clark County Museum is a function of Clark County Parks and Recreation, which is accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies. The museum is a 30-acre site that features a modern exhibit hall with a timeline exhibit about southern Nevada from pre-historic to modern times and a collection of restored historic buildings that depict daily life from different decades in Las Vegas, Boulder City and Henderson.

Through the Department of Interior’s Every Kid in a Park program, 4th graders participate in an in-class interactive presentation by our interpretive staff. How to Start a School Garden

-
Form a garden committee. Start with at least 3 teachers and one or more administrators. This is crucial because, without a commitment from teachers and administrators, the garden may not be sustainable.
-
Define the purpose of your garden. What needs can your garden fill? Where will the funding come from?
-
Layout your objectives.
-
Define a multi-year plan for your garden. What will happen to your garden during the summer? What will you be planting?
-
Identify an appropriate location for the garden taking into consideration access to water-source, natural light, and accessibility.

Field Trips
Extension has a long history of providing school garden support, field trips and garden-based learning for youth. Extension, Clark County's horticulture department established one of the county's first school gardens programs in 2002!

The Youth Horticulture Education Program (YHEP), designed in 2017, expands on previous efforts to now offer a sustainable four-corner garden-based learning approach for all of Clark County’s youth environments. The program offers horticulture projects for youth, families and educators in collaboration with community volunteers and partners.

Using a four-corner approach, YHEP delivers:
-
knowledge development
-
career readiness
-
professional development
-
basic garden support for youth environments.
-

The four-corner approach allows YHEP to permeate through all levels of the ecological model for positive youth development.
